Wednesday May 28, 2025 – Sheridan Probus Spring Lunch

This year we made a few changes, and everyone was very happy with the menu selection we chose. We enjoyed a Soup and Salad Bar buffet-style lunch with friends in a beautiful setting at the Credit Valley Golf & Country Club.

January 28, 2025 – Bowling and Lunch

We were able to beat the winter blahs with a morning of 10-pin bowling at Classic Bowl on Dundas Street West. Whether a pro or a beginner, we all had fun.  After the bowling, we had a scrumptious buffet lunch at the Mandarin Restaurant.

November 28, 2024 – Dundurn Castle Victorian Christmas Tour and Lunch

We travelled to Hamilton to enjoy a one-hour Victorian Christmas Tour of the Dundurn National Historic Site. The mansion, built in 1835, tells the story of the family who lived upstairs and the servants who worked downstairs. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Rock Garden Bistro in the Royal Botanical Gardens just down the road from the castle.

September 25, 2024 – My Fair Lady at the Shaw Festival

We enjoyed a delicious lunch followed by a matinee performance of My Fair Lady at the Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Driving in comfort with no parking concerns, we visited with other members on the deluxe coach. After a gourmet lunch at the Queenston Heights Restaurant, we attended a fabulous performance of My Fair Lady, one of the most beloved musicals of all time. This timeless classic has been dazzling audiences since its debut on Broadway in 1956. Based on the play Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw, it’s the story of Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl caught in the middle of a bet between Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics and Colonel Pickering, a fellow linguist. With unforgettable songs such as “On the Street Where You Live,” “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?”

June 21, 2024 – Evening at Mohawk Racetrack

We had an exciting evening of outdoor dining and cheering on our favourite horses and jockeys at Woodbine Mohawk Park in Campbellville, Ontario.

At the Mohawk Harvest Kitchen we savouried great food created with locally-sourced ingredients, while experiencing panoramic views of the harness racing action.

July 24, 2024 – Tina: The Tina Turner Musical

Sheridan Probus members had the opportunity to experience the electrifying journey of the legendary Tina Turner at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre. This musical showcased the iconic singer’s life, from her humble beginnings to international stardom. We sang, we dance and we were inspired by the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll herself.

March 14, 2024 – Tour of The Weather Network

On March 14, 2024, some 40 Sheridan Probus members had the opportunity to tour the studios of the Weather Network in Oakville. It was a very interesting experience and certainly enlightening. In addition to forecasting the weather, the Weather Network is also responsible for the Alert Ready System, including Amber alerts.

We toured the facilities and the morning group even had the opportunity to meet with one of the on-camera forecasters who told us he reports for work at 4:00AM every day. Once he arrives there are meetings where the “stories” that will make it to air are determined in conjunction with the chief meteorologist and producers. It was interesting to learn how much broadcasting skills are involved in delivering the weather news.

Everyone enjoyed the visit to the studio with the giant green backdrop wall in front of which all forecasters stand. We found out how much of a challenge it can be to point in the right direction when delivering the forecast!

Thursday February 29, 2024Leap Year Trivia Challenge

When something only happens once every four years, it’s probably considered a “special” occurrence. That’s what happened at the end of February this year – Leap Year Day. Our members celebrated the occasion by participating in a Leap Year Trivia Challenge at the Port Credit Legion where 26 club members faced off against each other in categories like Leap Year facts, Canadiana, Music, Sports and Where in the World.

Teams were assigned as members arrived and this gave everyone an opportunity to mix and mingle. Lots of laughter was heard around the room during play as well as “Shhhh” and “Whisper a little louder please!” Everyone seemed to have a great time. At the end, Team #2, a 5-person team won the Trivia Challenge and were awarded Tim Hortons gift cards. The door prize for a Sheridan Nurseries gift card was won by Carolyn Sixt.

Thanks to the members of the Events Committee for organizing this fun event.
Next Trivia Challenge: February 29, 2028!

Thursday January 11, 2024 – Guide Dog Training Centre

On January 11, approximately 35 Sheridan Probus members visited the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Training Centre in Oakville. It was an extremely interesting experience enjoyed by all who attended. The Lions Foundation provides guide dogs, free of charge, for eligible clients across the country but all the dogs are trained at the Oakville facility.

We were welcomed into the building by 3 staff members who gave us a very informative presentation on what the foundation does, how dogs are selected for the program, what the different training programs are, and the costs involved in providing trained guide dogs for clients.  For photos, see the Photo Gallery.

After the presentation we had a chance to tour the facility and meet many of the dogs currently in residence. The star of the show was the beautiful canine who was being trained to work with the hearing impaired. She was training to respond to knocks on the door, door-bells ringing, telephones ringing and most importantly to alert the owner to a fire alarm. She was a beautiful and very impressive puppy!

The Centre uses a lot of towels in keeping the dogs dry and comfortable and we learned that they would welcome donations of towels. The Events Committee will be making a one-time onlycollection of used but in good condition bath towels at the February 2024 monthly meeting, to be donated to the Centre. Probus members are encouraged to bring ONE (just one) bath towel to the meeting for this cause.

Wednesday November 8 – Tour of Toyota Manufacturing Plant

On November 8th 2023, a group of intrepid Sheridan Probus members made their way to the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) Plant in Cambridge, Ontario.

We received a warm welcome from the guides at the Experience Centre where we investigated the interactive exhibits.  After viewing an introductory video, we boarded our motorized trams to tour the Assembly and Weld shops.

Our knowledgeable guides kept us informed as we watched the mobile robots autonomously transport goods through the facility, lift car underbodies from floor to ceiling then place them precisely on the next stage of the production track where side panels and roof structures are added.  More than 90% of the welds on each vehicle are performed by the robots which can accurately place welds within one-tenth of a millimetre.

TMMC is environmentally conscious and aims to be a ‘leading corporate citizen’ by sending zero waste to landfill every year.

Following the tour, we had a brief Q&A session before heading home.

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy this terrific experience.

Friday July 28 – Mohawk Racetrack

The Sheridan Probus event to the Mohawk Racetrack was an enjoyable outing for the 28 people who participated.  Some members visited the Casino before moving to the restaurant. It was a pleasant evening to enjoy a delicious meal outdoors. Betting and cheering on our favourite horses, carefully selected based on the horse’s name or the colour of the driver’s outfit, kept everyone busy.  Nobody left the racetrack much richer, but we had a lot of laughs and fun with our Probus friends.

Wednesday June 28 — Grand River Cruise

The Grand River Cruise event started with a tasty snack in the auditorium while watching the talented “Blazing Fiddles” entertain with a selection of toe tapping, sing along tunes. When we boarded The Grand River Princess for our private cruise, the Captain noted that we were a very chatty group. After a yummy lunch, some people moved to the promenade deck to take in the quiet surroundings. It was a pleasant day made especially enjoyable by the good food, excellent service, and great company.

Sunday June 11 Blue Jays game

The Sheridan Probus outing to the Blue Jays game was great fun.  We had excellent seats on the third base side where we cheered for our team. One lucky person ended up with a baseball to present to a grandson although it was a little scary when that ball was coming right at us. The first few innings were disappointing but a come from behind victory made the day. Good seats, good company, cold beer, and a win…who could ask for more.

Tuesday May 2, 2023 Sheridan Probus goes to see Hamilton

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Hamilton-Pic.jpg

On May 2nd, nineteen Sheridan Probus members travelled to Toronto to see the musical Hamilton at the beautiful Princess of Wales Theatre. Our seats, which were located at the right side of the theatre, gave us excellent sight lines and we were able to see the stage clearly and everything that was happening.

Hamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda which tells the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton. Although we may not have understood all of the rapping, we had to marvel at the genius of Miranda and his ability to transform an entire book into a rapped musical! The choreography was amazing, as was the acting.

Before the show, 13 of our members decided to have dinner at the Elephant and Castle where everyone appeared to have a great time judging from the noise level in the section of the restaurant assigned to our group.

All in all, it was a fun and successful outing!

Tuesday April 25, 2023 Niagara Parks Power Station

The Sheridan Probus excursion to the Niagara Power Station was a winner. The deluxe coach carried us to Niagara-on-the-Lake for lunch and shopping then drove us along the beautiful Niagara Parkway to the Power Station.

Excellent tour guides taught us how electricity had been produced in this plant and the phenomenal work that went into building and maintaining the facility and the unimaginable working conditions that were endured for $0.25 per hour.

Following the tour, we were transported down 180-feet in the glass walled elevator to the 2200-foot-long Tunnel to the Falls. Despite the mist and the cold, the view from the observation platform looking up at The Falls was worth every step.

After a delicious four-course meal at the Table Rock Restaurant, overlooking the Horseshoe Falls, we returned to the Power Plant for Currents. This outstanding immersive and interactive sound and light experience presented the transformation of water to power from the Ice Age to the present.

It was an exceptional event and the 43 people who shared the day with friends, old and new, were exhausted but delighted with the outing. Thanks to Year-Round Travel for coordinating the trip and transporting us safely and to Liliana Chocarro for keeping track of us.

Reflections on the Sheridan Probus excursion to Tea at the White House in Waterdown, April 14, 2023

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” Henry James

Those of us who made our way to Waterdown for Afternoon Tea at the White House were indeed treated to a most “agreeable” experience. The staff was warm and welcoming, encouraging us to relax, unwind and indulge. And we did just that. We perused the tea menu which offered us a choice of more than 200 varieties of loose-leaf teas. Decisions, decisions.

While we sipped our tea, we enjoyed a selection of dainty, “finger” sandwiches (including thinly-sliced cucumber and salmon mousse), scones served with clotted cream and preserves (strawberry, raspberry) and a variety of sweet treats (Pavlova with Chantilly cream, Scottish shortbread). And of course, we engaged in stimulating conversation, with some of us eagerly debating the all-important question: Once the scone has been split in two, in what order should the clotted cream and jam be added?

We also browsed the on-site tea shop, and several of us purchased teas, biscuits and even some unique tea-ware.

It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and to meet new ones.

March 23, 2023 — Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

Sheridan Probus friends went to see planes, planes and more planes at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. The museum was founded in 1972 and houses almost 50 aircraft, many of which are still being flown. There are several supportive exhibits in tribute to the thousands of men and women who built, serviced and flew these aircraft and in memory of those who did not return.

The day began with a fascinating 30-minute presentation about the Avro Arrow and was followed by a Q&A period. The tour started at 11:30am and lasted about 2 hours. We had a team of very knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers who shared many stories and facts about the aircraft we saw. Wandering among the giant aircraft was a unique experience!

After the tour, we enjoyed a “Buy your own Lunch” in the Runway Cafe which had a varied light lunch menu. We also had the opportunity to visit the extensive Aviation Gift Shop with interesting and unique gifts for both little ones and adults.
